(3). See a, an art (2). II indef. prn 1. безличное местоимение, на русский язык обычно не переводится; 2. слово-заменитель, во избежание повторения на русский язык не переводится (1). Безличное местоимение one 1. употребляется только в единственном числе в неопределенно-личных предложениях:
One never knows what may happen — Никогда не известно (Никогда не знаешь), что может случиться.

One must do one's best — Нужно сделать все возможное.

One must remember — Следует помнить/Нельзя забывать.
Вместо безличного one могут использоваться местоимения you, we, they и существительное people для указания того, что принято или что должно быть сделано. Эти местоимения часто используются в пословицах, поговорках, утверждениях общего характера:
What do you call it? — Как это называется?

People say it is not true — Говорят, это неправда.

They say he is very bright — Говорят, он очень умен.
(2). One 2. как слово-заменитель употребляется в единственном и множественном числе с исчисляемыми существительными. One часто замещает исчисляемое существительное, которое имеет при себе определительное прилагательное, в этих случаях one следует за прилагательным, в отличие от русского языка, где в аналогичных конструкциях прилагательное обычно употребляется самостоятельно:
It was an interesting problem, and an important one — Это была интересная проблема, и важная.

I've lost my umbrella and I will have to buy a new one — Я потерял зонтик, и мне придется покупать новый.

New cities and old ones — Новые и старые города.
Если one заменяет существительное, которое употреблено с неопределенным артиклем, то артикль с заменителем этого существительного не употребляется. Если же существительное употреблено с определенным артиклем или указательными местоимениями this, that, то они сохраняются:
If you want a camera you can buy one at our local shop — Если Вам нужен фотоаппарат, Вы можете купить его в нашем местном магазине.

Shall I give you this book? — No, not this one, the one next to it — Мне дать Вам эту книгу? — Нет, не эту, а ту, что стоит рядом.
Вместо повторения неисчисляемого существительного или исчисляемого во множественном числе при указании на неопределенное количество употребляется местоимение some:
She likes flowers, let us buy her some — Она любит цветы, давай купим их для нее.

We have run out of sugar, go and buy some — У нас кончился сахар, пойди и купи его.
Местоимения it и they употребляются, только если они относятся к тому же самому объекту, который назван заменяемым существительным (в случае повторения это существительное требовало бы определенного артикля):
You have a very good coat. Where did you buy it?

Tom makes very strong coffee. I wonder how he drinks it.
При отсылке к существительным, обозначающим парные предметы, такие, как gloves, trousers, stockings, shoes, они заменяются сочетанием a pair (of):
You need new gloves, go and buy yourself a pair — Тебе нужны новые перчатки, купи их себе.
(3). Предложная группа one of употребляется с последующим существительным с определенным артиклем и во множественном числе. Такая группа согласуется с глаголом в единственном числе:
One of the books is not mine — Одна из этих книг не моя.
